How does Ed.ai grade without an answer key?

Last updated: October 15, 2026

An answer key is optional: only the question sheet is required. Adding one is still recommended, because it brings the grading closer to what you expect.

Ed.ai builds on solid pedagogical foundations: skills frameworks, official standards and the work of our learning designers (see Sur quels contenus pédagogiques Ed.ai entraîne-t-il ses modèles d’IA ?). From there, the AI can grade your students' papers even without an answer key from you.

✅ Adding a detailed, precise answer key still guides Ed.ai on your specific expectations, your wording, and the criteria you want to reward or penalize.

👉 In practice, most teachers already have an answer key for their assessments: adding it simply helps Ed.ai match the way they grade.

👉 For open-ended questions, written arguments or long responses, you don't need a complete model answer. A grading guide can be enough, with what to reward and what to penalize. These notes feed into the detailed grading scale you review before adding your papers.

💡 Important: Even for written responses, providing an answer key or key points makes the detailed grading scale, and therefore the grading, significantly more accurate. An answer key ensures the grading matches what you expect.
