Do I have to provide an answer key?
Last updated: October 15, 2026
No, it’s optional, but we strongly recommend one. Your assessment must include the question sheet, exactly as your students receive it. Adding an answer key and a detailed grading scale is recommended.
✅ A detailed, precise answer key keeps the grading as close as possible to your expectations, your wording and your grading criteria. Ed.ai also draws on the standards behind your curriculum (Common Core, AP and state standards such as TEKS) and on the work of our curriculum team (see Sur quels contenus pédagogiques Ed.ai entraîne-t-il ses modèles d’IA ?), but your answer key is what tells it exactly what you expect.
👉 In practice, most teachers already write an answer key for their tests: you might as well use it to help Ed.ai match your expectations.
👉 For open-ended problems, multi-step reasoning and proofs, the answer key can be a grading guide: instead of giving the expected answer, it says what to give credit for (a valid method, a justified step) and what to take points off for (a missing justification, an unchecked condition). This guidance adds to the detailed grading scale you review before adding papers.
What if Ed.ai finds the assessment incomplete?
Its status changes to “Missing document”, with the message “Your assessment looks incomplete or empty.” Click “Complete my assessment” and add the missing document.
And the grading scale?
It isn’t required, but a detailed grading scale is recommended: it’s what brings the grading closest to your own. Without a grading scale or a rubric, the assessment is graded and analyzed, but it isn’t scored, with points or by competency.
