Which assessment documents are required?
Last updated: October 15, 2026
For Ed.ai to grade an assessment, here’s what it needs:
-
The question sheet (required):
It’s what students have in hand during the assessment. It lets the AI understand how the assessment is built (questions, instructions, point values).
-
An answer key (recommended):
It isn’t required, but it’s strongly recommended. It tells the AI which answers you expect and helps it follow the reasoning behind them. For open-ended questions, a grading guide that lists what you expect works too.
-
Your students’ papers:
These are the documents you upload once the papers are scanned, so the AI can analyze and grade them.
The grading scale: optional but recommended
It isn’t required, but a grading scale is strongly recommended, because it lets Ed.ai award points or mastery levels according to your exact criteria. Adding a grading scale on top of the answer key makes the grading more precise and closer to what you expect. Without a grading scale or a rubric, the assessment is graded and analyzed, but it isn’t scored, with points or by competency (message “No rubrics detected”).
If a document is missing
If Ed.ai finds the assessment incomplete, its status changes to “Missing document”, with the message “Your assessment looks incomplete or empty.” Click “Complete my assessment” to add the missing document.
Accepted formats for assessment documents: PDF, Word (.docx), LibreOffice (.odt), JPEG and PNG.
