What if a student’s handwriting is hard to read?

Last updated: October 15, 2026

To read and understand your students’ work, Ed.ai uses optical character recognition (OCR). This technology “reads” handwriting to create a faithful digital version of the paper, its digital twin, that the AI can grade.

If a paper is still too hard to read, it’s simply set aside as is, with no automatic grading. You’re alerted in the interface (“Unreadable document” tag), so you can handle it your way. If the scan quality is the problem, see Une copie ou une évaluation est en erreur. Pourquoi ? Que faire ?

Why? Because we don’t want to make risky guesses: the AI never invents what it can’t read.

That said, don’t worry: we already handle a wide range of handwriting styles, thanks to testing on real student papers, varied and sometimes very hard to read!

To go even further, we work with a university research lab that specializes in reading historical handwritten documents (yes, some student handwriting comes close to hieroglyphics!). This partnership makes our OCR even more reliable across more handwriting styles.
