Can I grade with both points and competencies?
Last updated: October 15, 2026
✅ Yes, absolutely. With Ed.ai, you can grade:
-
with points,
-
by competency,
-
or combine both in the same assessment.
Ed.ai adapts automatically to the way you grade:
-
By competency: there’s nothing special to do. When the competencies are written right on the question sheet, Ed.ai detects a competency-based assessment and uses the mastery levels you set (for example, Beginning, Developing, Proficient, Advanced). On each paper, Ed.ai shows the mastery level reached for each competency in each exercise, then an overall level with a comment that explains it.
-
With points: add a document with your grading scale to your assessment, with the points for each question.
-
Both: no need to duplicate the assessment, the two work together in the same assessment.
You’ll find the result in the “Assessment documents” tab, under “Scoring details” and “Competency details”.
⚠️ If you add a grading scale once the papers are graded, grading runs again on all the papers, which erases any adjustments you made by hand.
Good to know: what’s the difference between a points-based grading scale and a rubric?
-
A points-based grading scale gives the assessment a score. It sets the number of points for each question or criterion, based on how much each part of the answer matters: for example, 3 points for setting up the system of equations and 2 points for solving it.
-
A rubric lets you assess by competency, without necessarily giving a score. It describes mastery levels for each competency or criterion.
