Is Ed.ai FERPA compliant?

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Yes. When your school or district uses Ed.ai, Ed.ai acts as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

What that means in practice

  • Student education records (assessments, papers, scores, feedback) are used only to provide the service to your school. They are never used for advertising, never sold, and never used to train AI models.

  • Your school or district stays in control of its data. Ed.ai processes it on your behalf under a signed data processing agreement: the NDPA v2.1 (National Data Privacy Agreement), with a General Offer available to other districts.

  • Before any AI model reads a paper, the student’s name and other identifying details are masked.

  • Student data never leaves the United States: it is stored on Microsoft Azure (West US 3 region) and processed by US-hosted models.

  • Parents and eligible students keep their FERPA rights. Their requests go through the school, and Ed.ai helps the school answer them.

What this means for you as a teacher

You can upload student work to Ed.ai as part of your normal grading, the same way you use your district-approved gradebook or LMS.

Documentation for your district

Everything your administration needs is on the Ed.ai Data Privacy Hub: Privacy Policy, Trust Pledge, FERPA & COPPA compliance documentation, Security Overview, sub-processors list, and the data processing agreement. Privacy questions: privacy@ed.ai.
