How do I run a differentiated assessment for students with IEPs or 504 plans?

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Ed.ai lets you adapt your assessment and your support to students with specific needs, while respecting their accommodations and their pace.

👥 Which students are we talking about?

Students who need a specific adaptation in how they're taught or assessed. This can include:

  • students with extended time or other accommodations in an IEP or a 504 plan,

  • students with learning differences (dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc.),

  • or other situations flagged by your school team.

📝 How do I adapt the assessment in Ed.ai?

Ed.ai lets you handle these cases while keeping things organized.

1. Create a dedicated group

Create a custom group with only the students concerned. This lets you:

  • assign them specific assessments (for example, an adapted or modified version of the question sheet),

  • track their progress separately from the rest of the class.

These students stay in their regular class group at the same time.

2. Upload a differentiated assessment

Nothing stops you from uploading a modified assessment (for example, a shorter question sheet or adapted instructions) for this group only, with its own answer key and grading scale. You grade and analyze their papers just like the others, in a setting adapted to them.

3. Use targeted reteaching activities

After grading, you can create targeted reteaching activities from these students' papers, or based on their profile. This lets you:

  • target the skills they need to work on again,

  • adjust the exercise format (multiple choice, guided writing…),

  • adapt the difficulty or the pace.

4. Ask Ed to adapt instructions or exercises

With “Talk to Ed”, the Ed.ai assistant can help you:

  • rephrase instructions in a simpler or more explicit way,

👉 useful for students with dyslexia, English learners, or students who struggle with reading comprehension.

  • adapt an exercise (for example, turn an open-ended question into multiple choice, or shorten a text),

  • create a targeted practice sheet for a student or a small group, based on a difficulty you've noticed.

🎯 You can differentiate without rebuilding everything, while respecting each student's specific needs.
