What does being connected to the GAR mean?
Last updated: October 15, 2026
📍 For schools in France. This article covers a system that only schools in France use.
Being connected to the GAR (Gestionnaire d’Accès aux Ressources numériques), the French national platform that manages access to digital resources, means being part of the national access management system.
This system, run by France’s Ministry of National Education (Ministère de l’Éducation nationale), acts as a trusted institutional third party. It requires a thorough review of each application:
-
Prior audit of the declared data processing;
-
Check that data use complies with the GDPR (RGPD in French);
-
Centralized contracting of the data processing relationships;
-
Definition of the data allowed (transparent, pseudonymous, anonymous).
Unlike the European GDPR, which relies on accountability after the fact (compliance must be demonstrable in case of an audit), connecting Ed.ai to the GAR means a public authority reviews the data processing beforehand.
Being connected to the GAR lets students and teachers in public schools access digital resources directly through their ENT (their school’s digital workspace), without signing in again.
